Chapter 19- A small Celebration- with the Blessings of my GP

Dear Friends and Fellow travellers, I am happy to report that my very nice GP is pleased with me.  For those who are struggling to overcome Type 2 Diabetes, especially after a stroke, I have halved my HBa1 reading and am making steady progress towards the 'safe zone.'  Having a good rapport with and faith in your GP is priceless and a luxury I have only recently been afforded.  Dr T is a young, no nonsense, strikingly alert and attentive General Practitioner who ticks all the right boxes for me in Primary care. He takes the time to listen to and address my every query and comes back to me with a measured and practical response.  To top it all , he has a generous and twinkling smile which removes all doubts and apologies for attending his very busy clinic.

So armed with a pat on the back from such a reliable source, I let down my guard this Anniversary weekend and decided to PARTY! Thursday night was a musical dinner with my Samarpan Singing Crew and Friday with my beloved Family.  Now, for someone who has struggled with the sight & smell of food these past weeks, you can imagine that meal in a restaurant was going to be quite a challenge.  Well, the first, at our favourite local haunt, Chennai Spice, in Edmonton, lived up to its now well deserved 'Tiffin award runner-up' reputation ( Congratulations again , Mr Siva), providing live music and excellent South Indian Fare
.  I actually managed a whole plate of mini-idlis with sambar by myself.

I had found & booked our Friday night venue via the internet and was a little apprehensive that it may not live up to the expectations built up by its lovely website.  Urban Haandi in Harrow turned out to be a restaurant we had previously visited under a different name. My heart sank a little when I saw that the new owners had done nothing to raise its kerbside appeal but the moment we walked in the doors, my fears were dispelled.  The place was buzzing with revellers and almost fully booked, always a good sign. Within the first 20 minutes, the manageress offered to take a photograph of our group and both she and her husband remained warm, friendly and attentive throughout the evening.  I later learned that they too was celebrating thier wedding anniversary that evening as were their live singing couple Uma and husband with a voice like the legendary Mukesh.   It truly was night of celebration and as the evening progressed more and more talented singers emerged out of their regulars,  But sadly, I ran out of steam long before they did!

The food & service did not disappoint either.  The waiters and waitresses were quick to clear and polite maintaining a clean table between courses and when the food arrived, I was elated!  The presentation of the starters was exquisite and appetising.  It actually made me want to eat and the tasting that followed lived upto expectations.  Each dish with it own unique flavour not something tossed in a generic sauce.  Portions looked small at first but went a long way amongst our party of seven.  I was just a little disappointed not to see malai kulfi on the dessert menu but then arrived the 'piece de resistance'- white chocolate samosa and gaajar halvaa presented as one would in a gourmet restaurant. Enough on a plate to share between three.

Sorry Dr T.  Just let the guard down a little tonight but I promise to be good from now on!

Would I recommend this restaurant,  without hesitation !

Try it on a Wednesday or Friday musical night and let me know what you think.

  1. Despite not having had two words to commute for much of our acquaintance, Devina remains one of The Much Respected individuals I have come across. Although I am no longer permitted to eat out as much as I would want to, like you, I will make an exception and try out this Urban Haandi in the near future. (My wife's 60th Birthday is fast approaching ... ).
